5 - Lila

Asher got off the cart and walked toward the fourth hole as I turned to look around the green, the beauty of the place was something I couldn't ignore. The sunlight pushed through the trees and the breeze was a little chilly, but perfect for a fall day.

A group of men moved down the path beside us and one of them glanced over at me and stopped.

"Lila?"

"Craig? Hi." I laughed and got out of the cart, walking quickly to him.

He reached out and touched my shoulders, the large older man hovering over me by a foot and a half. He had been a basketball player in college and still carried himself really well.

"What are you doing here, girl?" He laughed again and I couldn't help but smile. He was an old client of mine and his positive persona was contagious.

"I'm here with a client of mine. Just learning more about him before starting to work his file, much like I did yours." I glanced back at Asher and noticed him moving toward the green. I had a few minutes to kill, and a friendly face was comforting in the midst of so many strangers. "How's your game today?"

He leaned over and pressed his lips to my ear, surprising me a little. "Not so great, but I told the boys I'm having problems with my knees."

He moved back and I smiled up at him, chuckling softly. "And are you having problems with your knees?"

"Hell no. I'm as right as rain."

"Well, I'd not go that far." I lifted an eyebrow and yelped softly as he moved in for a big bear hug. I returned the gesture and patted him on the back like I would a stranger to tell them thanks for the affection, but no thanks.

I stepped back and tilted my head to the side. "Tell me about Meredith. You guys still doing okay? Any plans for a family on the way?"

"Oh hell no. You know how us guys are. We think we know what we want and then we get it and realize that it’s not at all what we were after."

"Really? I thought you guys were great together. How long did it last?" Disappointment rushed through me, but I pushed it back down. I had done my job properly. Wealthy men never really found what they were looking for, at least that's the way it had worked out in my career thus far. They thought they could pinpoint their desires, but most of them went through women like they did underwear and simply ended up sad and alone as they grew older.

"Six months. That long distance shit was too much to deal with."

Someone called to Craig and he turned for a moment before pulling a small white business card from his back pocket. "I'd love to try again. Call me and we'll set something up."

"Sounds like a plan."

He leaned over and kissed my cheek before walking toward his friends. Glancing back, he yelled his parting remarks. "Good seeing you, girl.
